What I’d focus on if I were starting in Telecom Today (2026) – Part 1

March 22, 2026

If I were entering the industry right now, I would ignore the noise.

Not because AI isn’t important or automation doesn’t matter—but because foundations outlast hype. Every few years, the industry finds a new buzzword. But the engineers who lack the basics? They’re the first ones to struggle when the “magic” breaks.

Here is my 3-step roadmap:
1. Master the Fundamentals (The “Why,” not just the “How”) Before chasing niche certs, obsess over the basics:
✔️ IP addressing and subnetting.
✔️The logic behind routing decisions.
✔️Packet-level traffic flow.
The Goal: Don’t just learn to configure; learn to understand. Weak foundations create fragile engineers.

2. Seek the “Stress” of Operations Don’t rush into a cozy design role.
Get into the support roles. That’s where you learn:
✔️How networks behave under real pressure.
✔️Why documentation is a life-saver, not a chore.
✔️The high stakes of a “small” mistake.
The Result: This builds the discipline.
3. Weaponize your Soft Skills.
Technical knowledge gets you noticed. Professional maturity gets you growth.
✔️Structured thinking during outages.
✔️Clear, jargon-free communication.
✔️Calm incident reporting.
Early in your career, patience isn’t just a virtue—it’s a prerequisite.
In Part 2, I’ll dive into choosing a specialization and staying relevant in the AI era.
